Mrs. Jehanara Ali is a mathematics teacher at Booker T. Washington High in Tuskegee, AL. She earned a Master’s degree in Pure Mathematics from Pakistan. She also earned two Master’s degrees from Auburn University, one in Applied Mathematics and the other in Mathematics Education. She has been associated with TEAM-Math since 2005, and currently she is a Fellow of the TEAM-Math Teacher Leader Academy pursuing a Specialist’s degree in Education. She taught at the high school level in Pakistan for 12 years, following the local curriculum as well as the British ‘O’ level curriculum. She has been teaching in Tuskegee for nearly three years. Dr. S. Raj Chaudhury is the Associate Director of the Biggio Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning at Auburn University, where he works with faculty and graduate teaching assistants to improve teaching practices. His research interests are in the application of learning technologies in STEM fields for K-12 and undergraduate education. Dr. Chaudhury taught for 10 years at Norfolk State University, Virginia where he founded and directed a science education research lab that was active in research and teacher professional development related to undergraduate and K-12 STEM education reform. Ms. Catherine Culleton is from Richmond, Virginia and graduated in 2007 from Auburn University with a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Mathematics Education. After working with the TEAM-Math curriculum writing team, becoming the Secretary of East Alabama Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and participating in several TEAM-Math quarterly meetings, Ms. Culleton entered the TEAM-Math Teacher Leader Academy to pursue a Master’s degree in Secondary Mathematics Education. Currently, Ms. Culleton is an eighth grade teacher in Tallassee, Alabama teaching Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1 at Southside Middle School. 6th Annual Conference Information|General Conference Information |
Ms. Debra Davis grew up in Montgomery, Alabama, and graduated from Montgomery Catholic High School in 1979. She earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Secondary Mathematics Education with a double minor in Psychology and Sociology from Troy State University at Montgomery in 1985. She is employed with the Elmore County Board of Education as a junior high mathematics teacher, and has taught for 22 years at the same school. She has received several awards including the Class Act Award, and Teacher of the Year at her school three times. She has served on various State, Local, and National committees including the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Standards Setting in 2005. She holds a trainer certification for Year 1 and Year 2 Alabama Mathematics Science Technology Initiative (AMSTI) for Grade 8 and is a Mathematics School Teacher Leader. Currently, she is a Fellow of the TEAM-Math Teacher Leader Academy, and is pursuing a Master’s of Science degree in Secondary Mathematics Education. 6th Annual Conference Information|General Conference Information |
Dr. Francis (Skip) Fennell has had a long and varied career in mathematics education including experience as a classroom teacher, a principal, and a supervisor of instruction. He is currently Professor of Education at McDaniel College in Westminster, MD, where he directs the Elementary Mathematics Specialists and Teacher Leaders Project (EMS&TL). Dr. Fennell has been the recipient of numerous awards including Maryland's Outstanding Mathematics Educator (1990), McDaniel College's Professor of the Year, and the CASE - Carnegie Foundation Professor of the Year for Maryland and the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics’ Glenn Gilbert National Leadership Award. Widely published in articles and textbooks related to elementary and middle-grade mathematics education, Dr. Fennell is the immediate past president of NCTM, where he helped create and promote the influential “Curriculum Focal Points” document. More recently, he served on the National Mathematics Advisory Panel, a White House-commissioned group charged with identifying effective practices in mathematics education. 6th Annual Conference Information|General Conference Information |
Dr. Christine Franklin is a Senior Lecturer in Statistics at the University of Georgia and Honoratus Lothar Tresp Honors Professor (recognized as the UGA Outstanding Honors Professor 5 different years). She has been a recipient of the UGA’s Arts and Sciences Outstanding Faculty Academic Advisor Award and UGA’s Arts and Sciences Sandy Beaver Outstanding Teacher Award. In 2008, Chris was inducted into the UGA Teaching Academy. She has written approximately 50 journal articles and resource materials for textbooks, including an Introductory Statistics textbook co-authored with Alan Agresti (now in the 2nd edition). Chris was the lead writer for the American Statistical Association Pre-K-12 Guidelines for the Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) Framework. She has given more than 75 invited talks on statistics education at the Pre K-12 and undergraduate levels. Chris is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and has served many years at the national and state level working in statistics education which includes the development and writing of standards in statistics for K-12. She completed serving her term as the AP Statistics Chief Reader in July 2009. She is President of the national statistical honor society, Mu Sigma Rho. Chris was honored in 2006 with the Mu Sigma Rho National Statistical Education Award. Mrs. Nancee Garcia is a mathematics teacher at Auburn High School. She has been teaching geometry and algebra for six years. She has her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mathematics education from Auburn University and is currently working on her PhD in mathematics education in the TEAM-Math Teacher Leader Academy Fellowship program. She serves as the TEAM-Math teacher leader at Auburn High School and has served as a summer institute presenter and has also worked on the curriculum committee. Ms. Gayle Holladay has taught for 25 years with the last 13 years being at Opelika Middle School. The past three years she has taught the inclusion class for sixth grade mathematics. Dr. Lisa Kasmer is an Assistant Professor of elementary mathematics education at Auburn University, bringing 31 years of classroom and professional development experience. Prior to Auburn, Lisa was a mathematics teacher and K-12 mathematics department chair. Lisa received her doctorate from Western Michigan University as a doctoral fellow for the Center for the Study of Mathematics Curriculum. As a doctoral fellow, Lisa was involved in research funded by the NSF, including an analysis of state and national mathematics curriculum documents, developing a web-based instrument database, a mathematics curriculum adoption study, and exploring the role of mathematical knowledge for teaching. Lisa’s research interests include gaining insight into what makes teaching mathematics for conceptual understanding challenging. With respect to conceptual understanding, the role of prediction in the teaching and learning of mathematics is a continued research interest for Lisa. Dr. W. Gary Martin is a Leischuck Endowed Professor for Critical Needs in Education in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching in the College of Education. He teaches a range of undergraduate and graduate courses in mathematics education and is the director of the TEAM-Math project, an NSF-funded partnership of Auburn University, Tuskegee University, and 14 school districts with the common goal of transforming mathematics teaching and learning in east Alabama. Before coming to Auburn, Dr. Martin served as the Director of Research for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, where he oversaw the development of Principles and Standards for Schools Mathematics, the organization’s national standards for mathematics. In addition, he has been a faculty member at the University of Hawaii in the Curriculum Research and Development Group and at Northern Illinois University in the Department of Mathematical Sciences. Dr. Martin has an extensive list of publications and presentations. Most recently, he has chaired NCTM’s High School Curriculum Project, which produced Focus in High School Mathematics: Reasoning and Sense Making. 6th Annual Conference Information|General Conference Information |
Dr. John Mayer is Principal Investigator for the Greater Birmingham Mathematics Partnership. He works on education-related projects at UAB with the Department of Mathematics, the School of Education, the School of Engineering, and the Department of Computer and Information Sciences. His mathematics research interests include complex analytic dynamics from a topological viewpoint, and continuum theory, a branch of topology incorporating both point set and geometric considerations. 6th Annual Conference Information|General Conference Information |
Mrs. Pamela Norris is a K – 3 math specialist for the Alabama Math, Science and Technology Initiative (AMSTI) - Auburn University site. Prior to that, she was a second grade teacher at Jeter Primary School in Opelika, AL, where she served as the TEAM-Math School Teacher Leader. She has been in education for 16 years. She received her B.S. in Early Childhood Education from Auburn University in June 1993 and her M. Ed. in Early Childhood Education from Auburn University in Montgomery in August 1999. She has been a TEAM-Math presenter for six years and served on the TEAM-Math curriculum writing and textbook adoption committees. She has presented at numerous inservice sessions and conferences including both ACTM and NCTM. Dr. Mohammed A. Qazi is a Professor of Mathematics at Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Alabama, where he has been teaching since August 2000. He initially came to the United States from Canada on a postdoctoral fellowship that was awarded to him by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). His fields of research include the Theory of Functions of One Complex Variable and Approximation Theory. He has also been involved in several outreach projects funded by state and federal agencies to improve mathematics and science education in schools in the eastern and western parts of the state of Alabama. 6th Annual Conference Information|General Conference Information |
Dr. Marilyn Elaine Strutchens is a Distinguished Professor of Mathematics Education in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching at Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama where she serves as coordinator for the secondary mathematics education program and co-director of TEAM-Math (Transforming East Alabama Mathematics). Moreover, Dr. Strutchens was the chair of the Research Committee for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) for 2007-2008, and she is the series editor for the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators’ Second Monograph Series, 2007 - 2011. Dr. Strutchens served as co-editor for NCTM’s 2007 yearbook, entitled The Learning of Mathematics: 69th NCTM Yearbook, authored and co-authored several journal articles, and was the lead editor for the book Changing the Faces of Mathematics: Perspectives on African Americans. She is also known for her work in some of the NCTM’s Interpretations of the Mathematics Assessment for the National Assessment of Educational Progress Monographs. 6th Annual Conference Information|General Conference Information |
Ms. Ann Stuedeman has taught 8th grade Inclusion at Southside Middle School for the past 14 years. She is a TEAM-Math School Teacher Leader and presents for TEAM-Math, 6-8 grade band, and AMSTI, 6th grade level. Dr. William F. Tate IV is the Edward Mallinckrodt Distinguished University Professor in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis. He is the founding director of the Center for the Study of Regional Competitiveness in Science and Technology. Professor Tate is a past president of the American Educational Research Association. He served as scholar-in-residence and assistant superintendent—mathematics and science in the Dallas Independent School District. In addition, he served as project director of the Dallas Urban Systemic Program. His responsibilities included leading the implementation of a theory of change that called for policy and resource alignment with a central goal of improved student outcomes in mathematics, engineering, technology and science (METS). Mrs. Ellen Marie Tolbert is a native of Tuskegee, Alabama. She is a teacher at Booker T. Washington High in Tuskegee, Alabama, where she has taught Geometry, Algebra II/ w Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, AHSGE Test Preparation, and FORD-PAS. Prior to teaching high school, she taught middle grade integrated science and Pre-Algebra. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (1988) from Tuskegee University and a Master’s of Science degree in Secondary Mathematics (2002) Auburn University, Montgomery (A.U.M.). Upon graduating Tuskegee University in 1988, she accepted employment with the Naval Engineering Weapons Facility in Concord, California serving as lead Junior Engineer providing technical guidance in performing engineering analyses on failed weaponry, designing test equipment, and providing quality assurance monitoring of the overall air-to-air weapons stockpile. She later transferred to the sister company in 1996 to Yorktown, Virginia, where she served as Lead Project Engineer overseeing two major weapons systems programs for the Navy. She decided to become a teacher in 2002, and has loved it ever since. Since becoming a teacher in 2002, she has made many gains – some of which include serving on textbook committees, writing and securing multiple grants for school equipment, starting the first Math Night and first Math Bowl at her school. She has served as Presenter for the TEAM-Math Summer Institute Cohort, 2004 and has facilitated PACT workshops for Macon County Public Schools. She has served as a TEAM-Math Teacher Leader for six years as well as math ESMAT instructor for high school students for three years through the HCOP program at Tuskegee University. She has received numerous awards and certificates for her various contributions within the school system – including Teacher of the Year in 2005. Bertha Y. Walker has worked for the Macon County Board of Education for 30+ years. She graduated from Tuskegee University (Institute) with BS and Master degrees in secondary mathematics. She taught mathematics for more than 25 years. Bertha Walker is very active in the areas of improving mathematics teaching and learning. She has served as a TEAM-Math presenter. Bertha Y. Dr. Dorothy Y. White is an Associate Professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Georgia. Her research focuses on equity in mathematics education by examining effective ways to increase the mathematical performance of students of color. In particular, she studies the development of professional learning communities in urban schools, alternative methods for the professional development of teachers, and the preparation of preservice teachers to work in culturally diverse mathematics classrooms. Dr. White is currently PI for Project ISMAC (Improving Students’ Mathematics Achievement through a Professional Learning Community), a member of the NCTM Research Committee, and Editor for the Research, Reflection and Practice Department of the journal Teaching Children Mathematics. 6th Annual Conference Information|General Conference Information |
Mrs. Anna Wright has taught 7th, 8th, and 9th grade mathematics classes in the Auburn City Schools for 28 years. She currently teaches 8th grade Pre-Algebra and Geometry. She is an 8th grade presenter for TEAM-Math and a high school presenter for AMSTI.
