Biographical Sketches

Dr. Michael Adams is the Director of Applied Statistics Program at the University of Alabama. He is a member of the American Statistical Association (ASA) and Mathematical Association of America. Dr. Adams currently serves as Chair of the ASA President’s Advisory Council for Teacher Enhancement (ACTE). He has taught mathematics and statistics courses at the 7th grade through graduate level and worked in industry as a statistician. Finally, he was a developer and presenter of the Alabama Quantitative Literacy Program. Though his primary research field is Statistical Process Control methodologies, Mathematics and Statistics education is a key interest for him.

Ms. Jennifer Brewer received a Bachelor of Science degree at Oklahoma State University, and subsequently taught for 3 years on a reservation in Laguna, NM.  Afterwards, she worked for 2 years at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL as the Curriculum Development Manager, before moving to Dallas, TX to teach middle school science and mathematics for 3 years.  Since 2001, she has worked for Texas Instruments Education Technology Division as an Educational Products Coach assisting educators in finding and using the best mathematics and science technology tools to enhance student learning and achievement.

Mr. Jack Frederick, Principal Systems Engineer with Raytheon Company of Waltham, Massachusetts, serves as a leader in the SLAMRAAM Missile Program. Jack holds a BS in Chemical Engineering with extensive experience in solid rocket design, development and testing with Raytheon, NASA and Morton Thiokol.  He holds a Black Belt in Six Sigma and served as an Instructor in the Raytheon Program Management College and on the Steering Committee.  In 2002 the United Nations asked Jack to serve as an UNMOVIC Weapons Inspector in Baghdad. As a MathMovesU Ambassador he teaches in Middle Schools, High Schools and Universities. Jack began building rockets at six under tutelage of his older brothers…he has two hands and ten fingers.  Drawing on life experience and technical expertise Jack conducts seminars on Rocket Science & Leadership. He’s been happily married to Gail for 35 years through three children, a foster daughter, two sons-in-law and two grandsons.

Dr. Melissa C. Gilbert, now an assistant professor at Santa Clara University, recently completed her doctorate in Education and Psychology at the University of Michigan. Her dissertation focused on the relationship between students’ motivation and their achievement in mathematics. Prior to pursuing her doctorate, Melissa taught mathematics in self-contained as well as single-subject settings. She has collaborated with TEAM-Math for several years, analyzing motivation-related survey data from participating students and teachers as well as conducting professional development workshops for teacher leaders.

Ms. Gayle Herrington, B.A. in mathematics, Spelman College, and M.Ed. in mathematics education, North Carolina State University, is a doctoral candidate at Auburn University. She has taught high school mathematics and worked as an education specialist with NASA. Currently she is Assistant Professor of Secondary Mathematics Education at Columbus State University.

Mrs. Cathy Jones majored in Secondary Mathematics Education earning a B.S. from Auburn University at Montgomery in 1988 and a M.S. from Troy University in 1995. She received her NBPTS Certification in 2005.  An eighteen year veteran of the Elmore County School System, she taught seventh and eighth grade math as well as Algebra I, Algebra II, geometry, and inclusion math classes. Cathy has been a part of the TEAM partnership since 2003, working on the curriculum and textbook committees, serving as a school and district leader and presenting at the 2005, 2006, and 2007 summer institutes. Currently, Cathy is employed by the Alabama State Department of Education as a math specialist for the Alabama, Math, Science, and Technology Initiative (AMSTI).  She resides in Wetumpka, Alabama, with her husband and teenage son.

Ms. Lora Joseph is currently finishing her PhD in Mathematics Education at Auburn University. Her research interests include defining effective teaching and how effective teaching impacts achievement. She works as a full time faculty member in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching at Auburn University and shares various responsibilities in TEAM-Math and in the mathematics education department. Lora has three children and resides in Opelika, AL.

Dr. Glenda Lappan is a University Distinguished Professor, Department of Mathematics, and Division of Science and Mathematics Education at Michigan State University. She has served as a program director at the National Science Foundation. Her research and development interests are in the connected areas of students' learning of mathematics and mathematics teacher professional growth and change at the middle and secondary school levels. She has published more than a hundred scholarly papers and numerous books for middle grades students and teachers.

Dr. W. Gary Martin is a professor of mathematics education in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching at Auburn University. Prior to that, he was the Chief Education Officer at the National Council of Teacher of Mathematics, where he served as the project director for the Standards 2000 Project that produced NCTM's updated Principles and Standards for School Mathematics. He earned his doctorate in mathematics education from the University of Georgia and has also held positions in mathematics education at Northern Illinois University and the University of Hawai'i, where he headed a curriculum research and development project for high school geometry. His research interests include the impact of standards on mathematics education and the learning of geometry and proof.

Ms. Michele Matin has been teaching for 24 years. She has a BS and Master’s degrees from Auburn University. She is a National Board Certified Teacher. She has presented at the Alabama Council of Teachers of Mathematics Conferences, TEAM-Math events, and for the Columbus Collaborative.

Dr. Calvin McTier recently earned his Ph.D. in mathematics education from Auburn University. His dissertation involved research that examined the interfacing of systemic reform and inclusion. He has taught on both the secondary and post secondary levels. He has taught mathematics for the last twenty-six years at Alabama State University in the Department of Advancement Studies. He is married and the father of twin boys. He also serves as the pastor of the Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama.

Dr. Denise Mewborn is a former elementary school teacher and is currently a Professor of Mathematics Education and department head at the University of Georgia. Her teaching and research are systematically integrated around a theme of preservice elementary mathematics teacher education. Other areas of interest include open-ended assessment and statistics education. She served on the writing team for the recently-released Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education, published by the American Statistical Association. In her spare time, she serves on her local board of education.

Mrs. Pamela Norris is a second grade teacher at Jeter Primary School in Opelika, AL. She has taught for 14 years. She received her B.S. in Early Childhood Education from Auburn University in June 1993 and her M., Ed. in Early Childhood Education from Auburn University in Montgomery in August 1999.  She was inducted into Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society in 1999 and is member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International- Beta Sigma Chapter. She has been a TEAM-Math presenter for four years and serves as School Teacher Leader for her school. She also served on the TEAM-Math curriculum writing committee. Recently she attended AMSTI presenter mathematics cross-over training in Alabaster, AL. She has presented at the ACTM 2004 Conference in Montgomery, AL and the NCTM 2005 Southern Regional Conference in Birmingham, AL. In addition to these activities, she has presented inservice sessions for Opelika City Schools and other school systems in East Alabama. She has been married to Ken for 11 years and has one daughter- Kennedy, age 6.

Dr. Randy Philipp is professor of mathematics education in the School of Teacher Education at San Diego State University and a member of CRMSE, SDSU's Center for Research in Mathematics and Science Education.  He has been a secondary school mathematics teacher in Los Angeles, California, and in Liberia, West Africa. He has written research articles and chapters, coauthored a research monograph, and has also written for practitioners. In January 2006, he became the first recipient of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educator's Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Dr. Mohammed A. Qazi received his Ph.D. from the École Polytechnique (Université de Montréal) in Montréal, Canada. He is currently an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Tuskegee University where he has been teaching since August 2000. His fields of research include the Theory of Functions of one Complex Variable and Approximation Theory.

Dr. Marilyn Elaine Strutchens is a Professor of Mathematics Education in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching at Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama where she serves as coordinator for the secondary mathematics education program and co-director of TEAM-Math (Transforming East Alabama Mathematics). Moreover, Dr. Strutchens is the chair of the Research Committee for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) for 2007-2008 and the series editor for the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators’ Second Monograph Series, 2007 - 2011. Dr. Strutchens served as co-editor for NCTM’s 2007 yearbook, entitled The Learning of Mathematics: 69th NCTM Yearbook, authored and co-authored several journal articles, and was the lead editor for the book Changing the Faces of Mathematics:  Perspectives on African Americans. She is also known for her work in some of the NCTM’s Interpretations of the Mathematics Assessment for the National Assessment of Educational Progress Monographs.
